God Delights in Me

During today’s sermon, my pastor stated, “God delights in you.” I immediately questioned that idea and thought, “delights?” He loves me, sure but DELIGHTS? I’m a sinner, in the flesh, weak but He loves me anyway. That does not define “delight”. The Lord delighting in me was so appealing. I’ve been meditating on the idea all day.

Delight: A high degree of pleasure or enjoyment; joy; rapture. I have never thought of my relationship with God this way. I may have thought of other’s relationships with God this way but certainly not my own. Being so full of sin, how can He delight in me? Then I thought of my relationship with my children and considered my delight in them. They are in constant need of correction but I love them anyway. I love them with every bit of my being and I certainly do delight in them by its very definition. With God being so much greater than I, specifically in LOVE would He not delight in me as well? I think it stands to reason that He would but since I try to avoid relying on my own understanding I went to God’s word.

Psalm 18:19 He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me. The context here is David speaking and he’s talking of being “delivered from any power that might hold him” as my study Bible states. Why? Because He delights in those of us who serve Him. Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. In conclusion, though I may see myself as one who never spends enough time in prayer, in study, in deed, in meditation on things that are holy, in time shaping my children, or helping my husband, etc,… I am now blessed to understand that God sees me differently. He doesn’t just love me waiting on me to join Him in heaven where I can finally be without sin, He delights in me NOW. He knows my heart and knows that I serve Him, honor Him, glorify, love, fear, and DELIGHT in Him. Therefore both of these verses apply me and to you and I am so refreshed at this finding.
